Vegan Side Effects: 5 Possible Side Effects of Going Vegan

What Is Veganism?

Veganism refers to refraining from the use of animal-based or animal-derived products. Being vegan encompasses a lot more than just dietary choices.

This change in perspective extends to every field of life that involves animal products.

Vegans choose to utilize only plant-based products for a variety of reasons, including health concerns, ethical values, or religious beliefs.

Many people opt for veganism only to eliminate their use of animal-based products.

People who are dedicated to the purpose of stopping the exploitation of animals for various products like milk, honey, gelatin, meat, leather, and wool often make this kind of transition.

A lot of people select a vegan lifestyle for environmental reasons as well.

As compared to the harvesting of crops, the production of livestock exerts a much higher burden on resources like land, water, and fossil fuels by contributing substantially to greenhouse gas emissions.

Along with social welfare, a well-planned vegan regime offers a wholesome, nutritionally adequate, and versatile package of health benefits to humans.

A number of people perceive animal products as toxic and claim to see a clear improvement in their health after making this paradigm shift to veganism.

Side Effects of Going Vegan

Energy and weight issues

When consuming plants which in nature have lower calories than animal foods, it means you eat larger volumes of food in order to get all the calories you need.

By under eating as if you were on a meat and dairy diet, you risk having health problems.

You can end up with low energy levels and feeling sluggish due to not eating enough.

Opt for whole vegan foods and skip processed sugar, oils and other junk that have no nutritional value.

Due to poor diet, lacking in key nutrients, vegan newbies suffer from the most common type of iron deficiency, anemia, which occurs when a person isn’t getting enough iron in their diet.

Iron is essential to the creation of hemoglobin in the blood which in turn carries oxygen from the lungs to the body’s other organs.

This leads to dizziness, fatigue and weakness.

Trouble Sleeping

Systemic change can upset all your body’s systems and that can include the systems that regulate your sleep patterns.

Especially during the detox period, you may well find that you find it harder to get a good night’s sleep.

Try to eat your evening meal earlier in the evening, so you have time to digest it before you go to bed.

Avoid caffeine and other stimulants late in the day.

Do not have any electronic devices such as phones, tablets, laptops or TVs in your bedroom and develop a bed time routine to get into a sleepy mode before you lie down and shut your eyes.

Try a soothing chamomile tea to relax and prepare for a good night’s sleep.

All these things should help, as will developing a healthier vegan diet perfectly suited to your nutritional needs.

Hair loss

Adjusting to a diet without protein-rich meats and fish could affect hair cell renewal and health. Protein is one of the most important nutrients for healthy hair.

Keratin a substance that provides the strength and structure of hair is a protein and our body makes it from the proteins that we eat.

Headaches can also be caused by the detox process and by the “hangover” from a diet high in unhealthy fats and processed sugars.

If this is the case, then this will pass as long as you keep eating a healthy vegan diet and drinking plenty of water.

Listen to your body, however.

If headaches persist on your new vegan diet, you may need to consider whether there is some imbalance.

Some people find that soy (like meat and dairy) can effect hormone levels, especially in women.

If your headaches are due to out of whack hormones then cutting out soy and replacing with other vegan options could be the answer.

Again, being more in tune with what you eat and what your body needs will help you find the right balance and the perfect vegan diet before too much time has elapsed.
