Steps to Success For a Career in Fitness

You just have to look at the numbers of people each year that are pursuing a career in fitness to see how popular a career in fitness and health is.

But even so, many may be ticking boxes to do a course, but then they have no idea how to make their dreams a reality. So the question is, if fitness and health is where your passion lies, how can you build a successful career in the industry?

To start off with, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to be doing. Of course, over time, these things will change as you discover new things and more passions. But to start off with, you need to have a bit of a plan of what you want to do in the sector.

Do you like group sessions and prefer to teach things like classes, or does working one-on-one with people appeal to you a little more?

If the latter sounds more like you, then perhaps personal training would be of interest to you.

The sales around fitness could also be of interest, as well as the nutrition side of things, so there are plenty of options to choose from.

When you know what rough direction you want to head in, you can then make plans to get qualified.

Going Back to School

While fitness related qualifications are in no way like doing a medical degree, you are still looking after the human body and you need to make sure that you are giving the right advice to people to make sure that all is well and all is safe.

Some courses, like teaching a fitness class, can be as much as a short course each day. But there are things like personal training courses or strength and conditioning courses that are going to be longer than just one day.

You get to earn a formal qualification with this kind of thing, which you will have for always to take with you.

You will get to learn all of the things like anatomy, physiology, and all of that good stuff associated with fitness.

Get Social

If you want to get started in a career with fitness, then it is a good idea to make sure that you are getting social.

If you want to work with people in a gym and in person, then getting social with people around you and at the gym you go to or work at, will be really important.

It can be a good way to network and get your name out there. Increasing your social media presence is so important as someone wanting to get established in your fitness career too.

It can be a great way to get your name out there and share tips and tricks that have helped you. It can also be a good way to get clients from being online, if people see what you are doing and what you are up to and like what they see.

Start Coaching

If you want to get into fitness after being qualified, without having to have an armful of clients; you don’t have to do anything too fancy from the start such as renting out a studio or rent a space in a gym.

To get things going, all you have to do is help someone to get in shape and help to improve their life one step at a time.

If you don’t feel able to coach someone on your own, then it could be a good idea to look to ‘shadow’ a personal trainer or another coach with experience.

It could give you a boost of confidence that you need to be able to go out and do it by yourself and get your own clients.

It is important to remember that you don’t need to know absolutely everything that there is to know about exercise or nutrition. You can still help to change someone’s fitness, and even their life, with what you know, rather than all that you know.

Knowing a little, and knowing more than the person that you are trying to help, is going to be a good way forward, and then you can grow and learn from there.

When you want to improve your career in fitness, nutrition, or coaching, then it is all about trial and error.

You may have personal experience to lean on and share, but some things you will just have to try things out and see how things go.

You have to remember that sometimes, no matter how much you think you are prepared, no matter how the number of tests that you pass, or the number of people that you shadow or internships that you do, you will have to try out different things, and are likely to try some things that turn out as great.

That isn’t going to be the end of the world, as long as you are able to learn and grow from it.

Practice What You Preach

With any kind of profession, you need to make sure that you are doing exactly what you say and practicing what you.

If you are a parent, for example, you can’t talk to your children about only eating well if you then yourself don’t eat well; the message isn’t genuine and you aren’t believed.

The same goes for a career in fitness and nutrition. You need to be practicing what you preach otherwise you aren’t going to be able to boost your career.

If you are seen to be out smoking and eating junk as a personal trainer, can you be taken seriously as such?

Doing what you love and loving what you do is really important, especially in this kind of industry that clients will want to have someone to aspire to.

A career in the fitness industry can be really rewarding, as well as being fun and enjoyable. It will take some time and effort to get things off the ground, but it will make a difference to plan it all out and plot your career path.
